Acknowledging the accomplishments of your students is essential
to their growth and development. To recognize each student
successfully, it is important to give praise according to his or
her needs. The True Colors concepts help identify personality
styles by grouping common attributes into fours colors. Use the
following tips to offer effective recognition for the various
“colors” in your classroom.
|
ORANGE
STUDENTS |
|
Generally active,
resourceful, and enthusiastic, Orange students enjoy a
chance to entertain their classmates and amuse
themselves at the same time.
-
They like to be recognized for their cleverness,
adaptability, and boldness. Allow them to
participate directly in class with impact and
payoff.
-
Establish a method for immediate payoff or tangible
rewards for a job well done, such as receiving a
sticker or badge for completion of certain
assignments.
-
Allow them to demonstrate their ideas verbally or
physically giving them a chance to be leaders and
stars.
-
Give instant recognition and honest critique “What
you did just now was great!”

BLUE
STUDENTS |
|
|
Because Blue students are naturally cooperative, they
might actually feel bad receiving an award for “winning”
over others. They prefer team awards, or recognition
for working to improve their own score, independent of
comparison to classmates.
-
Blues value expressions of appreciation that are
more personal and about their unique contributions.
-
Compliment their compassion, creative approaches and
sensitivity to the feelings of others.
-
Gestures of friendship such as a smile, hand on the
shoulder, or morning greetings , are very
heartwarming to Blues
-
Blues need to feel valued by you. Bolster their
self-esteem with acknowledgement that says, “I care
how you feel.”

GOLD
STUDENTS |
|
|
Dependable,
cooperative, reliable and conscientious, Gold enjoy
comments about whatever they produce, especially if
these comment recognize how well they meet the
established standards.
-
Be honest and sincere, mentioning actual
accomplishments.
-
Note accuracy, efficiency, and thoroughness in their
performance.
-
They value being recognized as responsible, loyal,
industrious, and doing the right thing. Show
evidence of successes such s stars on a chart posted
on the wall.
-
Encourage and reward by saying “I appreciate how
much you contribute to this class.”

|
GREEN
STUDENTS |
|
|
These
students want to be appreciated for their ideas,
creativity and competence. A compliment for
accomplishing a routine task will go unheard and might
even be taken as an insult. Instead notice how they
have been innovative or figured something out.
-
Respect their privacy and independence. Comments of
a personal nature can make them uncomfortable.
-
Appreciate their inquisitive nature and quest for
knowledge. Provide some degree of freedom in
selecting topics and projects.
-
Encourage them to explain their logic and be open to
discussing concepts
one-on-one after class if they
are interested.
-
Compliment their intellectual competence, “That is a
fascinating observation; I want to hear more.”

Keep in mind
that each student is unique and your experience interacting with
him or her provides the best insights to their motivations for
positive behavior. Give some of these suggestions a try and see
how well they respond to your praise.
